This press release, following the publication of A-Level and Level 3 examination results for 2023, encapsulates the excellent achievements of our students following a challenging year on a national level. This cohort of students have experienced disruption to their education in previous years and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, did not sit formal GCSE examinations. As a result, this was their first experience of formal public examinations, and they should be especially proud of their achievements as we are in them.

We are delighted with the excellent set of examination results achieved this year which represent performance in line with the outstanding pre-pandemic levels achieved by our students. We would like to extend our congratulations to all our wonderful students, it is well deserved.

At The Woodroffe School, we are immensely proud of our students, and we wish them the very best for the future. We continue to offer our full support and assistance to all students in the coming days and weeks, following the release of the A-Level and Level 3 results today. These have been challenging times and together we succeed.

Our school has a long track record of academic excellence and this year, despite the challenges, is no different. Our students have achieved incredibly well across the full range of A-Level and Level 3 qualifications and will continue to do so within their chosen new destinations.

We are amazed by the resilience and perseverance shown by our students. We also recognise the additional anxiety caused by the events of the past years and thank our parents and carers for their continued support.

Our staff worked incredibly hard to ensure that our students have been cared for and have continued to receive the best education possible. We have ensured that students have been given every chance to succeed and pursue their chosen next steps.

Students should be reassured that the grades they have received today have been fully earned and are the result of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance.

As ever, there were some outstanding individual A-Level performances:

  • Tilly Arscott – 2A* & 1A grade in English Literature, History and Maths and will be studying English at Oxford University
  • Iris Chapman – 2A* & 1B grade in Art, English Literature and Music and will be studying English Literature at Cambridge University
  • Kate Bartlett – 3A* grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and will be studying Mathematics at Bristol University
  • Lucy Waplington – 3A* grades in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and will be studying Mathematics at Bristol University
  • Louis Coplestone – 2A* & 1A grade in Art Graphics, Photography and Media Studies and will be going on to study Graphic Design and Kingston University
  • Chloe Mansi – 2A*, 1A & 1D grade in Geography, Psychology, Biology and Music Tech and will be studying Marine Biology
  • Charlotte Rositter – 2A* & 1B grade in Maths, Further Maths and Physics and will be studying Mathematics at Southampton University
  • Philip Micklethwait – 3A grades in Chemistry, Maths and Physics and will be studying Chemical Engineering at Manchester University
  • Martha Shuell – 3A grades in English Literature, History and Psychology

Other notable successes include students achieving at least 1A* grade – Freddie Coles, Evie Goolden, Roma Luton-Gordon, Coco Mellor, Ciara Nicholls.

Students who achieved at least 2A grades include – Marni Barlow-Marshall, Matilda Bloomfield, Mackenzie Dewar-Gibb, Lily Doolan, Charlotte Harris, Oliver Hawkins, Iris Huggins, Amos Jevons, Alexander McNeice, Kali Pearce, Rebekah Smith, Merlin Thompson, and Joe Whitehead.

It was pleasing to see so many top grades across all subject areas and there were outstanding performances in Photography, Art Graphics, and English Literature where over 50% of the cohort achieved a grade A*/A. The Spanish Department along with Classical Civilisations, Religious Studies and Art had over 70% of students gaining a grade A*/B while, Maths, Geography, History, Media Studies, and Drama all had over 80% of students gaining a grade A*/C.

Students also performed highly across our BTEC cohorts with six students achieving a Distinction in Business and Travel & Tourism, seven a Merit in Business, Travel & Tourism and Sport, and three a Pass in Business, Travel & Tourism and Sport. Troy Stork was awarded a grade A in The Finance Diploma and a Distinction in the BTEC extended Certificate. Isabelle Skinner was also awarded a Distinction in Business as well as in Travel and Tourism.

Of the 36 students studying the EPQ qualification, 9 achieved an A* and 8 achieved an A grade.

It is also worth noting that a significant number of students who took a gap year were successful in securing university places and they will be starting courses at some of the best universities in the country in September. Some examples include Amy Le Bas who is going to study Chemical Engineering at Cambridge University, Rob Wolfrey who is studying English at Oxford University and Freddie Shaw who is studying Philosophy at Cambridge University. Freddie Caswell who will be going to study Medicine at the University of Bristol and Eve Betteridge returns from spending time in South Africa to study Sociology at the University of Birmingham.

Students will be leaving Woodroffe to take up places at many of the top universities in the country. We wish them well and are confident that they are on course to succeed at degree level and beyond.

We are delighted that the school year ended positively and that students were able to experience some of the key moments in their ongoing development, it was fantastic to see them enjoying time together at prom and seeing them celebrate their success today.
