Physical Education

Woodroffe PE department provide an experience that supports the growth of knowledge, skills, and confidence through opportunities which allow all of our young people to have fun, fulfil their potential and enjoy a physically active and healthy life.

Our practical curriculum is designed to introduce, and progressively develop, our students’ skills and confidence across a range of core practical activities and sports.

The practical curriculum at KS3 is designed to introduce, and progressively develop, our students’ skills and confidence across a range of core practical activities and sports.

In Year 9, students can study the Sport Development enrichment route. This enrichment route allows students to build upon key principles which have been developed through practical PE in Years 7 & 8 and allows them the opportunity to further explore how the body works in relation to physical activity and the importance of leading a healthy, active lifestyle. The sport development enrichment route is in addition to core PE.

Head, Heart and Hands Assessment in PE

All students in Key Stage 4 will follow a compulsory, two-year, programme for two periods per week. Lessons are split into PE and Games lessons. Games lessons follows a programme of varying games-based activities whilst PE provides students with options regarding the type of practical pathway that they would like to follow. PE pathways at KS4 involves a more diverse range of activities than previously covered at KS3 and includes options such as the following: Cross Fit, Yoga, Pilates, Table Tennis, Parkour, Dance, Trampolining, Fitness Training, Fitness Classes and more.

Students also have the option to study for a GCSE in Physical Education (OCR) from the start of Year 10. GCSE PE covers both the physical and academic aspects of the subject. Students have three theory sessions and two practical sessions per fortnight which are in addition to core PE practical lessons. This course gives a very good grounding for further sport-based qualifications such as BTEC Sport / A Level PE.

The theoretical component of GCSE PE involves studying a wide range of topics including: Anatomy and Physiology; Physical Training; Socio-cultural Influences; Sports Psychology; and Health, Fitness and Well-being.

A Level in Physical Education

Overview

Studying A Level Physical Education will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have the chance to perform or coach a sport through the non-exam assessment component, you will also develop a wide-ranging knowledge into the how and why of Physical activity and sport. The combination of physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for students.

Minimum Entry Requirement
Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above. Grade 5 or above in Science and/or GCSE PE is essential.
You must also have achieved a good standard in your chosen sport or be a confident coach in one area of specialism.

Assessment and Report (Exam Board: OCR)
Theory

 

70% of total A Level grade
Paper 1: two hours long which forms 30% of the A Level
Paper 2: one hour long which forms 20% of the A Level
Paper 3: one hour long which forms 20% of the A Level

Practical Assessment

 

15% of total A Level grade
Students can choose to be assessed as either a coach or a performer in one chosen activity. The chosen activity must be selected from an approved list.

Coursework: Oral Exam

 

15% of total A Level grade
This NEA will consist of observing a live or recorded performance by a peer and then providing an oral response analysing and critically evaluating the performance.

Facilities

The school has a vast array of sporting facilities, including: a traversing wall; sports hall; fitness suite; gymnasium, netball courts; extended field space with two rugby pitches and multiple football pitches; an ICT suite and a PE classroom.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport

Overview

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport will appeal to any student considering further education or a career in the Sport or Sport and Exercise Science field. This course is equivalent to one A Levels. In total, four units will be covered over the two years.

Minimum Entry Requirement
Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above. Grade 4 or above in Science and/or GCSE PE is essential.

4 Units: (2 internally assessed and 2 externally assessed)

Alongside our practical PE curriculum, students at Woodroffe are encouraged to develop their theoretical understanding of key principles involved in physical activity from the start of their PE journeys in Year 7.

Not only can this support our students in future potential PE and Sport Science qualifications but it also develops knowledge which will help them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. All of this knowledge is taught as a part of our practical theory curriculum so that students do not miss out on practical lesson time.
