Inclusion

At The Woodroffe School we believe in developing the whole child. We want our students to be healthy, happy and in an environment where they can thrive.  We continually review our inclusion offer to ensure we are able to meet the needs of our students.

We have dedicated teams focusing on SEND, Pastoral Support and Wellbeing. In addition, we have a school Welfare Assistant and an Attendance Officer who work closely with our Heads of Year to provide holistic pastoral care to all of our young people.

At the Woodroffe School we have high aspirations for all students and believe that all should benefit from a broad and enriching curriculum. We know our students. This is evident from our student-centred approach, beginning with individual profiles, that helps teachers to be aware of the strengths and challenges of ALL learners. Our students report that the classroom climate is one that embraces diversity, fosters a sense of social responsibility, and supports positive peer relationships.

We embrace a graduated approach to inclusion which puts high quality teaching and learning for all students at the heart of our practice. Regular training and professional development opportunities mean that students are supported by specialists who use research-based techniques to support all learners. Where additional support is required, this is delivered through bespoke intervention programmes designed to develop learning skills and adapt the curriculum to be accessible to all. Interventions do not replace the curriculum. Where a more specialist provision is appropriate, we work with a variety of external agencies.

The majority of special educational needs and disabilities can be supported within the classroom. Questions about student support can be directed to the tutor or Head of Year in the first instance. Where appropriate, the Head of Year will seek additional input from the SEND team. We recognise the importance of working with families and therefore encourage parents and carers to share any concerns with us as soon as possible.

Inclusion, Policies and Statutory Info November 3, 2025

At the Woodroffe School we recognise that students can face a wide range of challenges on their journey through secondary school. All students have a dedicated form tutor and Head of Year who seek to guide them through these challenges and celebrate their successes along their journey. We recognise that some students will require extra support at times and our Pastoral Support Managers work to support those who struggle to engage with their learning. Heads of Year coordinate the support required for individual students and create bespoke plans utilising support from across the full Inclusion team (this can include SEND, safeguarding, attendance or pupil premium funding).

We are always seeking to expand and improve the support available for our students. We now have two fully trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) in addition to specialist support for students and parents facing the challenges of Emotional Based School Avoidance. In the last year we have also been able to add our own on-site forest school provision. If you require any additional information, please contact your child’s tutor or Head of year.

The wellbeing of students at The Woodroffe School is paramount. We have a dedicated Wellbeing Team who work with students across the school and an additional Wellbeing Mentor in the 6th Form. These teams support students with targeted intervention as well as supporting those who require less formal support. In addition to our own support team, we accommodate external agencies who work 1:1 or with small groups of students. This includes the Dorset NHS Social Prescribing Team who work in school every Wednesday.
