Together We Succeed

New York 2025

In half term, a fifth of our sixth formers went to New York. The trip served many functions; History students visited Ellis Island Immigration Museum, Geographers walked the high line and Artists experienced some of the most famous paintings in the world at New York’s MOMA.

For some, this was their first flight and for most their first time on the other side of the Atlantic, but for all it was a chance to soak up American Culture at a time that is uniquely fascinating.

We stayed a couple of blocks away from the heavily guarded Trump International Hotel and on our first day, walking through a Central Park dusted with falling snow we saw lots of the little things that make up New York life; joggers, street food and even a marriage proposal. Our accommodation put everything in easy reach and each day we hopped on the subway at Columbus Circle to visit sites like the Statue of Liberty, the top of the Empire State Building and explore places like Times Square and Maddison Square Garden.

We used our feet a lot, but the students were up to the challenge and explored the Metropolitan Museum, Guggenheim, and Natural History Museum. There was also some shopping and somehow, wherever we went, the students found a Target store to add to their sugar supplies.

My favourite part was walking the Escher-like Vessel building designed by Tom Heatherwick, and spending time in the company of such a great bunch of staff and students. My thanks to my fellow staff Mr Loveland, Mrs Vincent and Mrs Mattock for everything they did and for doing it all with smiles on their faces. They were incredible.

Scarlet said, “I really enjoyed my first trip to New York. The hostel was very close to Central Park, and every day was packed full of seeing so many different places which meant we did a lot of walking, but we also took the subway and a taxi. There were so many highlights of my trip, but I think my favourite bits were going up the Empire State Building and seeing Times Square. If you ever get the chance to go on this trip I would recommend it.”
